As the daughter of Dick and Betty Mills, I was fortunate to travel with my parents all over the nation and eventually parts of the world. My father’s gift was extra-ordinary in some ways. He had memorized thousands of scriptures by self-disciplining himself to get up at 4:00 each morning and from 4:00-6;00 he would study scriptures, passages and Bible stories.

He later told me that studying scriptures by topic was of great interest to him. He would then find out the meaning of certain words in those scripture passages, and study them further by getting a Strong’s Concordance and other Bible study books.
Memorizing Started With Familiarizing
He later taught himself Hebrew and Greek so he could learn the meaning of the words in the scriptures, giving more and more clarification to him.
My dad had a photographic memory, which enabled him to memorize scriptures. And scriptures in bundles.

He told me that he loved the Thompson Chain reference Bible because it while taking him to the scripture he was looking up, to the side it would show the next scripture that was in the same theme, or had the same wording. Going to the next scripture would also lead to another connecting scripture.
The TCR stands apart from other study Bibles in that it doesn’t include verse-by-verse commentary. Instead, it combines a 100,000-entry topical chain-reference system with an extensive topical index that connects over 8,000 topics. This system allows Scripture to interpret Scripture, making it an excellent, unbiased study Bible for anyone in any denomination.
He loved that he could look up a group of scriptures on the same topics. The topics are identified in the margin of the Bible with a reference to the next verse in the chain.
Mnemonic
This style of memorizing is referred to as MNEMIC-“assisting or intended to assist the memory.”
Using a song, or a rhyme, or procedural plan(all the same states, word themes, sports teams, capitals, etc.) for memorizing something.
Getting up at 4 each morning my father would make himself coffee with cream, and then begin to read and study scriptures that were grouped into topics.
He would group them together in a list format and begin to memorize them, reading them and reciting them out loud. He intentionally was trying to memorize scriptures and passages.
7700+ Scripture Promises
He had a brilliant mind and said reading was not enough. He wanted to ‘know’ the Bible. After 2 years alone, he began to add up and total all the scriptures he had familiarized himself with and knew it was in the thousands. Upwards of 7700 scriptures which he said were primarily ‘scripture promises.’ He had a mind for words as a Theologian and a mind for numbers. this allowed him to memorize the scripture references as well.
Scripture promises are different in the sense that they said what God would do. Usually there was a prerequisite.
“Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 is a primary promise from God’s Word.
He further decided that marking his Bible would assist him in memorizing scriptures in topical themes.

He would mark salvation scriptures, scriptures on the resurrection, healing, safety, the Holy Spirit and more by color coding them. This helped him locate specific scriptures when ministering.
It wasn’t until later that these scriptures became a pivotal part of his ministering to people in services.
He had paper tablets printed for my mother to write the scriptures on.
After finishing up school at Life Bible College in Los Angeles he began speaking publicly in churches. While he was ministering he would notice people that would just stand out to him during the service.
At the end of his services he would pray for the sick and the infirm, ministering to people who came forward for prayer.
One of the first services, where my father felt the Lord urge him to give someone a scripture as a prophetic word was in 1952 in Southern California.
A missionary couple came to the front of the church, wanting prayer. A woman and her husband had been missionaries, and were now back stateside. They were in their 70’s. With no plans on returning to the missionary field again. But she had a letter requesting them to do just that. In her Bible she held the letter.
Give Her a Scripture
Not knowing any of this, the Lord said to my father to ‘give her a scripture.’
But since this was a new thing, and he had not been ministering in this capacity he wasn’t comfortable giving her a scripture.
However it was a strong impulse from the Lord, so he walked up to her and asked her if it would be ok if he gave her a word, a scripture. The couple nodded, and she said yes.
Dad gave her the scripture, that was a go ahead and move forward scripture. It was a clear direction scripture.
She looked at him and opened her Bible and pointed to that very scripture where the pages were worn, and that exact scripture was marked.
It was the SAME scripture the Lord had given them the first time when they were called into the ministry many many years prior.
As young believers the Lord had called them into the ministry and given them this scripture as their open door scripture. Again as mature, lifetime believers God was giving them the same scripture and word to continue their call as Missionaries.
The same scripture. At the beginning, and now years later my dad was giving them the scripture that caused them to go back to the mission field in South America.
God continued to bless their years and their efforts as they again heeded the call of God that was still on their lives.
This was a hallmark of his ministry. What he had studied for years, spending time memorizing, familiarizing and knowing the scriptures were the very words that when spoken to people prophetically in a ministry setting, changed peoples lives, often miraculously.
Our family loved being together, we still do, and always asked him to give us a word before everyone went home.

God’s Word is powerful (Hebrews 4:12).
It can also change your life. Open it and begin reading, searching, studying and praying those very God breathed Words over your life. Breathe the life of God into your impossible situation. God’s Word will do what countless hours of trying to figure things out can’t do.

Quicken – means to ‘make alive’. When God quickened Adam it was when He breathed the breath of life into Adam and the breath brought him to life. (Genesis 2:7)
God quickens us as well with His Word. When we read His Word, pray and say His Word, something happens. We are made alive, again. Life comes.
Psalm 119:25-28“My soul cleaves unto the dust: quicken me according to your word. 26 I have declared my ways, and you heard me: teach me your statutes.27 Make me to understand the way of your precepts: so shall I talk of your wondrous works.28 My soul melts for heaviness: strengthen me according unto thy word.”
Job 33:4 “
The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.

Father in Jesus’ Name, breathe on us the breath of life. We pray that just as you breathed life into Adam and gave him life, that you would breathe in us. Breathe the breath of life into our spirits, our soul, our bodies. We know you will bring us to life with your spirit. (Psalm 119:25, Genesis 2:7)
“The same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now quickens our mortal bodies.” (Romans 8:11)
God we thank you for your resurrection power. We pray for that power to touch our lives, our marriages, families, finances, and our future.
We pray your will be done in our lives, and we come against Satan’s will from being done. (John 10:10, Matthew 6)
We want all of you we can get. Your presence, your power, your Holy Spirit. Thank you God for the Holy Spirit.
In your precious name Jesus, the Name above every name.
Amen.
Blessings to you,
Debbie (Mills) Booth
